The Joy Of Selfless Giving

Have you ever given a gift to someone expecting a "thank you" in return? How do u feel when the person fails to appreciate the gift?

On the other hand , how do you feel when someone says 'thank you' with a big smile for a  gesture you considered insignificant?

Reflecting on these will lead us to one discovery; there is great reaction in your inner self when you give, either in anticipation for a reward or as a selfless service.

Some of  the situations that prompt one to give might include the following;

1. We gave Because someone asked for a particular gift, it can be a present, financial help etc.
2. We noticed that someone is in need and decide to share.
3. We are performing an obligatory assignment, like a parent paying for a child's school fees.

In  all these, we always tend to achieve an aim; making available that which is needed by another person.

And by definition a gift is  a present or an act that does not require compensation from the receiver.

Then, why do we give gifts? What is our aim?
 We might say,

  •  To derive satisfaction, or fulfillment that we can be of help.
  •  To celebrate with a friend
  • To make  the receiver happy.
  • And sometimes we use gifts to say 'thank you' to another person who in a way affected our life positively in the past.
There are several other reasons. But most times our gifts go to close relatives, friends and colleagues and in all there is always this filling of accomplishment.

If there is a bit of satisfaction in giving to a close relative or friend, imagine how much more you will derive when you selflessly give to one who is not in any way connected to you and who is not in a position to reciprocate, when you give without expecting a 'thank you'.

  • That feeling you have, when you were able to help an aged woman fix her bad tire under a heavy down pour.
  • The inner fulfillment that springs up when you contribute to save the life of a helpless child on a sick bed.
  •  The awe sensation that comes to you that you were able to, even in your tight schedule and your tight budget, contribute to turn around a hopeless situation.
That feeling is Joy

A happy life is one filled with this inner spring of fulfillment. A life ready to give in exchange for joy. And this can easily be derived when we Selflessly Give.
